The summer months cause brutal temperatures that can be uncomfortable and even dangerous without a reliable air conditioner. When your air conditioner unit breaks down, it’s a serious issue that must be dealt with immediately.

Here at Edwards Royal Comfort, we understand how large of a role your cooling system plays in your home’s overall comfort. In our latest blog post, we’ll discuss what you can do when your AC unit won’t turn back on.

Look at the Thermostat

This may seem obvious, but make sure that your thermostat is set to “Cool” before taking any other steps. After you’ve confirmed the thermostat’s settings, adjust the temperature to a lower reading. If working properly, the AC should lower your home’s temperature to where you’ve just set it – and you’ll know the system is working fine. Sometimes, the issue is as simple as changing a setting on your thermostat if it was accidentally adjusted.

Check Your Circuit Breaker

Your air conditioner uses electricity to cool your home. When any unexpected surges occur, your circuit breaker is designed to shut off any electricity to the unit. When your AC system isn’t turning on, go look at your circuit breaker and make sure that the circuit breaker has not flipped off. If it has, it will need to be flipped back on before you can use the air conditioner.

If you attempt to turn the circuit breaker back on, but it just keeps flipping off, you’ll likely need to contact an electrician, as there may be an issue with the circuit breaker.

Check the Drain Line

Air conditioners create condensation as they run. Your air conditioner has a condensate drain line that is meant to take the condensation away from the system and out of the home. With extended use, the drain line can occasionally become clogged. This causes the system to shut off in an effort to protect the unit and not cause further damage to the drain line. Be sure to check the drain line for a clog.

Should you notice a drain line clog, be sure to reach out to an HVAC system professional as soon as possible to clear the clog and provide your home with cool air once again.

Call a Professional

If you’ve performed all of the previous steps, but you still can’t seem to fix the issue and bring cooling back to your home, reach out to an HVAC company. They’ll be able to inspect your system and provide you with a diagnosis. Whether you need to repair or replace the system, they’ll discuss your options with you to ensure that you’re able to receive cool air again.
