Every summer, our technicians head out on hundreds of service calls to Indiana homes with HVAC system issues. Sometimes their AC isn’t working right, and sometimes it’s not working at all. Either way – they’re uncomfortable, and we’re happy to help. However, we’re here to let you know that many of these problems can be easily avoided with a little preventative maintenance and upkeep! We’ve got 5 summer HVAC maintenance tips to share that will help keep your AC on all summer long. Keep reading!

5 Summer HVAC Maintenance Tips

1.) Invest In a Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats are an excellent way to alleviate the strain on your AC system and save money on your monthly bills. Modern programmable thermostats can automatically adjust the temperature of your home when you’re asleep, out for the day, or on vacation. For instance – if you work at an office all day, you can program your thermostat to go up to 75 degrees or more right as you leave, and back down to 70 degrees half an hour before you get home. You’ll be saving money all day at work!

2.) Get a Professional HVAC Tune Up / Service

Your HVAC system needs to be serviced and tuned up by a qualified technician at least once a year – twice if you want to be extra proactive. During these tune-ups, a HVAC tech can fix issues before they become a problem.

3.) Be Smart About Using Your HVAC System

We get it – on those unbearable hot days, it can be tempting to crank up your AC. However… this is a bad move. Just leave it at the normal temperature! Overworking your AC system in general will shorten its lifespan, and on excessively hot days, it’s already working much harder than usual. Try alternative methods to stay cool, such as closing the blinds on your home, or using your ceiling fans. Your AC will thank you!

4.) Seal Those Air Leaks

That old draft could be costing you a lot of money! Leaks and drafts release the cool air inside your home and let the heat in. Not only is that uncomfortable, but it forces your HVAC system to work much harder to compensate for the loss. To identify areas where air is leaking, seek assistance from professionals. Once you’ve pinpointed the air leaks in your home, seal them up using caulk or weather stripping.

5.) Change Your Air Filters

Ignoring your air filters is one of the biggest HVAC mistakes you can make. Air filters play a vital role in your HVAC system by preventing dust, pollen, pet dander, and other pollutants from circulating throughout your home via the ducts. When these particles accumulate and clog the filter, your AC system has to work much harder to draw air through it, resulting in unnecessary strain and decreased service life

We recommend you change your air filter every 1-3 months, depending on the type of filter you buy and the conditions inside your home – such as if you smoke indoors, have pets, or members of your family have health conditions that necessitate cleaner air.

Have a Cool Summer!

Keeping cool this summer is all about regular maintenance, timely filter changes, and professional service. Take these tips to heart this summer and you’ll ensure your AC system operates just how you want it to!
