Spring is almost here, and for allergy sufferers, warmer weather is not always a welcome guest. When the air outside your home becomes laden with allergens, inevitably the air inside does as well. We recommend that all of our clients in Central Indiana use whole house media air cleaners to remove these airborne particles and contaminants from the air to improve indoor air quality and breathability. If you already have a media air cleaner, be sure to replace its filter often to allow your air cleaner to perform at its best.

What Is a Whole House Media Air Cleaner?

A media air cleaner is an advanced air filtration system that works with a home’s heating and cooling equipment to filter air as it circulates through the ducts and HVAC system. They use replacement air filters, which are a few inches thicker than your average furnace filter and have a higher MERV rating. The higher the MERV rating is, the fewer contaminants can pass through it.

Using high-efficiency filters, a whole home media air cleaner provides effective filtration that removes contaminant particles – such as dust, dirt, allergens and pet dander – to provide your entire house with cleaner air. They are much more effective than portable air cleaners, which clean the air in just one room or area of a home.

Why Are Replacement Air Filters Necessary?

Just like the filter used in your furnace or air handler, an air cleaner’s filter isn’t designed to last forever. As time passes, more air circulates through the HVAC system and the filter becomes dirty and clogged. Eventually, the surface of the filter is completely filled with particles, which puts excess strain on your HVAC system. Once this point is reached, the filter can no longer effectively filter out new particles from the air.

Replacing the filter renews the system’s filtration abilities and allows airborne particles and pollutants to be removed from the air right away!

How Often Should I Install Replacement Air Filters?

High-efficiency replacement media filters don’t need to be changed as often as a furnace filter does. Air filters typically last anywhere from 6 to 12 months, depending on the type of filter used and the characteristics of your household. You may need to change the filter more frequently if there are smokers or pets in your home, for example. You can change the filter yourself, or call the team at Edwards Royal Comfort to take care of it for you.

Some air cleaners use replacement air filters that simply slide in and out of the filter cabinet, much like a typical furnace filter. Other air cleaner models may use accordion-style HVAC filters which fold out and attach to the air cleaner’s frame. This type of filter may be confusing to use if you aren’t familiar with them, but it is important that the new air filter fits securely into the frame for the system to filter air at its best. If you have trouble replacing this style of filter yourself, don’t sweat – just give us a call, and we can handle the task for you.
